Welcome to "Over the Road" Shop.
Our opening hours are: Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 9:30am to 3:30pm and Saturday 9:30am to 12 noon.
The newly refurbished Church shop located at 9 Buxton Road, Whaley Bridge SK23.7HT and known to everyone as ‘Over the Road’, reopened its doors a week later than planned in August 2019 due to the combination of the crisis at the reservoir and the damp weather which meant the plaster had taken nearly 3 weeks to dry out !
We were very fortunate to receive several substantial donations and we very much appreciate them, without which the work would not have been possible .An additional award from Whaley4 Wards supported by High Peak Borough Council, was used in part payment to replace the window glass, paint outside, provide a hanging basket and plants and for the addition of a new and very smart shop sign. We are also very grateful to the team of people who worked on fitting out and restocking the shop.
As a result we have a bright, clean and modern shop that is proving very popular in the village. We are able to spend time with people who pop in for a chat and a browse and are currently building up lists of people who want particular items. We also have a Facebook page which enables us to inform and share photographs of new arrivals to the stock and events with the community and local groups. One new venture is to display photographs of any furniture that people would like us to advertise for sale in return for 20% commission.
We have registered for dementia training in the future and are pleased to display an accredited certificate to show that we are a dementia aware shop.
Each week the window changes and people have been very complimentary about it and the changes we have made, saying what a delight it is to come and browse. In fact we have people who travel from as far as Greater Manchester and Sheffield areas on a weekly basis.
The quality of our stock is very much improved and we now have a special occasion rail with some designer names and brand new garments. Our prices are reviewed regularly to keep us in line with other local charity shops and all our unsold items are recycled or given away to support other charities. This year we have given regularly to a children’s charity, supported the homeless with warm clothing and have offered young Mum’s starter packs to Social services. Local crafters have made rag rugs for sale from our unwanted T shirts and we also sell hand finished upcycled cards.
We never forget that we are one of the faces of the Church in the community and are always ready to listen. We have been compared to the old corner shop where you went each day for the paper and a chat. For some who are alone this is so important. We are sure of God’s calling as we work in our shop. We are a happy band of over 30 volunteers but we are always looking for new volunteers who want to share this exciting journey.
Anyone interested in joining us can get more information from Claire Losel at the Uniting Church office.
